that brought us prep history’s only sub 40.0 4x100 relay a few years back, is a soph, who
lowered his seasonal best to 10.35 from 10.39 this day, the nation’s #2 prep time of the year!

--Great contest late in the evening on the first day of competition! A quick and talented
group would line up with Runnels (lane 1), Foster (2), Fifer (3), Edwards (4), Johnson (5),
George (6), McCann (7), and Huff (8). These people had qualified fast, it was a nice warm
evening with the air not too heavy, and there was a nice wind-legal breeze at the runners’
 backs! Hot times in Texas!!!!
Fifer was ever so slightly ahead for most of the race, with the short star looking extremely
strong. Edwards, next to him, reached down desperately over the final 40 meters to edge
up to and just past at the finish, with the scoreboard soon showing a shocking 10.18 clocking!
Fifer had a seasonal wind-legal best of 10.23, with Johnson’s 10.29 in third A NATIONAL SOPH
CLASS AUTO-TIMED BEST, a detail lost in the great action at the competition this evening. Wow!!!!
Edwards, the national Junior College Indoor 200 meter champ and outdoor 100 meter winner,
was a divisional State Champ last year as a prep in Albama at Opelaka High School.
His Community College campus is located in Hamilton, Alabama, and there are about 30 people
on the Track team. This is only his third meet ever outside the State of Alabama.
He stated that he knew he was behind through 60-80 meters, but he had come too far this season
to lose, so he dug down and ran through the end of the race. He stated, “I had driven twelve
hours to get here and was not going to lose.” He credited his coach for his improvement this
season, and came across as a very open young person, very comfortable with himself and
what he had accomplished this evening.

Down the backstretch it was Texas prep Nick Devenport who had a head of steam and challenged
at the 600 in 1:24.5. Devenport went by, with Doaty battling back up and past down the stretch,
with Bell moving also very strongly down the homestretch.

 - Jacob Garlick Champion Track Club DQ
--Rickey Harris had looked so good in his 50.07 the night before, so it was felt anything
was possible here. Rickey stated that the group was brought out to the track 15-20 minutes
prior to their race, with the time spent standing around waiting for the start, with he and
the other athletes told to take all their sweats off, taking the edge off his race.
The athletes were called to set their blocks at the starting line during that period,
then told there were eight more minutes until the start. He felt that this was the
difference between the 50.17 today and his 50.07 yesterday. He was tight during the race,
but had a fairly good step pattern and obviously was happy with the win and the time.
He did not collar Barton Community College and Wings TC star Chris Hickman until the run
down the homestretch, with the first two times impressive at the Junior level. With a perfect
race this summer it would appear that Harris could leave the prep ranks with all the 400 Hurdle records.

--Great competition here also. Six ended up over 25-02w. Robert Etheridge opened up the
third flight in the Trials with his 25-10.25w, had three fouls, a 23-10, then passed his
final jump when no one could catch him. UC Berkeley star, Robert Kennedy, steadily improved
up to his 25-09.25w on his final effort, with Ramon Washington a 25-08w on his fifth jump
to help make for a very exciting competition. The pit is right in front of the stands between
the spectators and the track, and the athletes seem to respond to this closeness!

--Another stunning contest! Joyce’s lane 4 was empty, as she and Coach Wells made the
decision to protect her leg for future seasons. Carpenter, not a great starter who has been
better at 200 than 100, was out behind by a bit, but is reacting with great power over the
final half of the event this year, zooming up and by some more experienced running mates, with
the next four finishers first year Collegians (Moore red-shirting). Carpenter’s time of 11.39
was quite impressive, an Olympic Trials Qualifier.
After the event Carpenter, a bouncy personality, was talkative. She stated, “I never have
a truly good start, and was out a bit behind.” When asked how she felt she would do coming

--Ton of good people here as this event explodes in quality! Interesting group made it
over 12-03.5, with Stuyvesant (Michigan prep), Ben-Youseff (Montana prep),
Stuyvesant (Pennsylvania prep), Rosenberg (Collegiate), and Donohue (Stanford University
and placer her last year). Ben-Youseff pr’d at 12-07.5, with Roseburg at 12-11.50,
and Donoghue the winner on attempts at the same height. Donoghue becomes the third
consecutive winner from Rancho Bernardo HS, with Tracy O’Hara winning two years ago
as a prep, then last year as a grad from RB and member of the UCLA program.
Her intention is to attend the World Championship Meet, with concerns about her
academic load at the Farm come the Fall semester, where she usually takes a heavier
load anticipating the spring track season. Having studied Spanish for a number of
years she looks forward to the trip to Chile for the Worlds!

--Great competition by dynamite group! Tons of personal bests with many wind-aided.
Jill Bell, a Washington prep at Bellevue who was a member of the World Youth team in 1999
in Poland for the under 18 World Meet, had a big seasonal pr with the wind of 19-07.5w from
the first flight. Californians, Michelle Sanford, a frosh at Woodbridge HS and the daughter
of former sprinter James Sanford, who won the California State meet at 19-07, had a wind
legal 20-02 and windy 20-03.5 in Flight 2, with Dana Bethel on the cell phone home to call
about her first ever 20-footer, a 20-01w effort from that group.
The third flight group contained the top entrants, with super Texas sophomore prep from
Luling, Ychilindra Spears, a legend already in the Lone Star state as just a soph, and the
National Prep Leader, missed the finals by .75 of an inch! Florida’s Yolanda Thompson,
who just missed the World Championship junior team two years ago in the Triple Jump over
a problem with a qualifying mark for that meet, emerged from Coach Tom Jones’ Gator
team with a big winner over a super crew! NCAA placer Tiffany Greer was relegated to
the non-qualifiers also, as her former Georgia rival, Tameisha King (Notre Dame) ended
up second at 21-02w. Elzbieta Wojcicka of San Benito HS in California has undergone a
recent name change from Elzunia Lamb as legal records were sorted out for entry to this
meet—turns out she is the grand daughter of a Polish star who was a gold medallist in
the Melbourne Olympics in the Long Jump from her family’s native Poland, and a silver
  medallist in Rome!
Michelle Sanford indicated real pleasure with her effort this day and her first 20-footer.
When asked what her if she was satisfied with her first year as a prep athlete,
she replied, “Oh yes, I wanted to jump 19-feet and qualify for state, and I ended up
at 20-feet and won the State competition!” She felt her extra hard work this spring
season was the reason for her continued improvement. About this day she stated,
“I feel good, it was a very good competition, and it was my first 20-footer!”
She is going to Buffalo for the Junior Olympics later this summer, and will certainly
be one of the favorites to qualify for the U.S. World Youth Team for the 2001 Championships
in Europe, with that under 18 competition qualified for from this coming July’s JO competition in New York.

--The best in the nation would sort out the All-American ratings here at the prep level!
High-Schoolers ended up with the top five placings. Laura Gerraughty continued her mastery
over this year’s group with a big 50-10.25 win, with her best coming on her third throw in
the Prelims as a response to Jessica Cosby’s 15.21 (49-11) on her second throw to take the lead.
Gerraughty, a great all-arounder who earlier in the day threw 178-03 in the Hammer for a
personal best there, added a fine second effort here.
Cosby, bound for UCLA, and a great all-around athlete indicated she will stick to track
in college (skipping basketball, where the quick and powerful star would be tough to
handle around the basket!). In College Jessica indicated that she would be throwing
the Shot Put and the Javelin, an interesting scoring option for the talented Southern
  California athlete.
As for her good efforts this day, Cosby replied, “I did not set a mark as a goal for today,
but I had some good practices lately, and just concentrated on relaxing in the competition.
I have had some good workouts that showed I was ready to improve.” She indicated interest
in attending the World Junior Meet in October. She is quite an amazing story, emerging
soon after knee surgery last spring to end up throwing over 45 feet her junior year.
As to her improvement this year she replied, “I have worked a great deal in the weight
room, and had a big break-through this year. I was glad I was motivated to work hard this spring!”
