The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) is America's first collegiate athletic conference. Founded in 1888, it predates the NCAA by 33 years or so. One interesting item that deserves notice is how early the MIAA was in sponsoring women's athletics starting with a tennis tournament in 1936. In 1941 the Athletic Federation of Michigan College Women (AFMCW) was established. It later became known as the Women's Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (WMIAA) in 1946. The MIAA is a Div. III conference.
