The Missouri Valley Conference was founded in 1907 and officially called the Missouri Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MVIAA) but went by the Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) name until 1928 when the conference went through a split with 6 of its schools breaking off to form the Big Six Conference (which would later add schools and become the Big 8). To this day, it's apparently still debated which conference was the original and which was the spinoff, though the Big Eight would go on to become the more prestigious of the two.
In August 1982 the Gateway Collegiate Athletic Conference was founded as a women's-only conference. Comprise of mostly the same schools as the Missouri Valley Conference the Gateway Conference would eventually be merged into the MVC in 1992.
