The Sunset League started in fall 1937 with first track season in spring of 1938. Originally comprised of four Orange County schools -- Anaheim, Huntington Beach, Newport Harbor and Orange -- plus two Los Angeles County schools -- Excelsior and Long Beach Jordan..
Santa Ana joined in 1943 and put its mark on the league winning five straight from 1945 through 1949. After a third place finish in 1950, the Saints then won four more in a row from 1951 through 1954.
In all, Santa Ana won 17 championships from 1938 through 1979. Newport Harbor is next with titles followed by Fullerton with five. Overall, 21 schools have been a member of the Sunset League but none in the league every year from 1938 through 1979.
