The Coast League was one of the oldest high school leagues in Southern California. The league started in 1924 with Long Beach Poly, San Diego, Pasadena, Fullerton and Whittier. In 1925 Santa Ana was added and in 1926 Glendale and South Pasadena joined. Over the 44 years of the league's existence, 24 schools participated. Compton, which joined in 1947, and Long Beach Poly each were members for 25 years. San Diego was a member for 21 years.
San Diego and Compton each won 11 titles. Long Beach Poly was a five-time team champion, while Centennial (which joined league in 1958) won three from 1963-65. Team scoring was eliminated in final six years of the league. After 1971 Compton moved to the Moore League and Centennial to the Bay League. In 1972, the final year of the Coast League competing members were Dominguez, Downey, Lynwood, Montebello, Santa Fe and Warren.
Olympians participating in Coast League included – Dick Barber, Bob Beckus, Reynaldo Brown, Ken Carpenter, Al Fitch, Bill Miller, Willie Steele, Delos Thurber, Jerome Walters, Ulis Williams and Frank Wykoff.
