AMERICAN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE
Born out of the Big East Conference in 1979 the American Athletic Conference (AAC) didn't come into its own until 2013 when the Big East Conference split up. The unusual structure of the Big East, with the "football" and "non-football" schools, led to its instability and by 2013 the conference was reeling from the waves of defection (the non-football schools, colloquially called the "Catholic 7" voted unanimously to leave the Big East Conference effective June 30, 2015).
The new name, American Athletic Conference was chosen for the conference. The oddity of all this is that the "Catholic 7" schools are members in the current Big East.
