The Big Eight Conference was founded in 1907 and originally called the Missouri Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MVIAA) (going by the Missouri Valley Conference name until 1928). There is some confusion here because in 1928 the conference went through a split with 6 of the schools breaking off from the MVIAA to form the Big Six Conference yet in the process the Big Six still claimed to keep the MVIAA name for formal purposes. The additions of Colorado (1948) and Oklahoma A&M (1957) would move the names to Big 7 and Big 8 (colloquially speaking). In 1964, the conference legally assumed the name "Big Eight Conference".
In 1994, it was announced that a new conference would be formed from the members of the Big Eight and four teams of the Southwest Conference which would become the Big 12 Conference.
