BIG EAST CONFERENCE
The Big East was founded in 1979 as a basketball-centric collegiate athletic conference and would remain largely unchanged until 1991, when it began to sponsor football. The unusual structure of the Big East, with the "football" and "non-football" schools, led to its instability and by 2013 the conference was reeling from the waves of defection (the non-football schools, colloquially called the "Catholic 7" voted unanimously to leave the Big East Conference effective June 30, 2015).
With the departure of the "Catholic 7" the remaining ten football-playing members started the process of selecting a new name for the conference and chose the American Athletic Conference as the new name. The weirdness here is that the Big East today includes these "Catholic 7" schools.
