The Mid-Atlantic Conference was founded in 1912 primarily as a track association. Beginning as the Middle Atlantic States Collegiate Athletics Association (MASCAA) it would reorganize later as the Middle Atlantic States Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC or MAC). Throughout its history, the organization has had at least 50 different members associated with it. In 1958 the conference added what it called a university division named the East Coast Conference for Division I schools. Conference Championship meets would have two divisions, College & University, from 1958 to 1974. In 1974 when the NCAA created Divisions I, II, and III the East Coast Conference officially formed up and the MAC became fully associated with Division III.
